Nasi Tumpeng is ceremonial meal that is not consumed day to day, the Javanese people describes that the meal was intended to be served during certain events, such as opening ceremony of office or events or historically when the first baby born ceremony.
The origin comes from Java, where the people who believe in Moslem but called them self as sekaten, which in the implementation of Eid Fitr celebrate them from the big mosque normally grand mosque and start the parade of visiting neighbours. During celebration, the one who will cut the top of the mountain is the eldest in the group which will distribute to the distinguish guest.
In the recent new era the tumpeng is common on birthdays, soft opening for offices or blessing of the new house so that the place become sacre. Although initial invention of this yellow rice was initiated in Java however the area of popularity has been widely known all over the countries of Indonesia.
There are many type of Nasi tumpeng, they depend on the ceremonial functions, some of the popular tumpeng are
- Tumpeng Nasi Kuning: means yellow tumpeng which is standard general events
- Tumpeng Robyong : means wedding or bride ceremonial
- Tumpeng Nujuh Bulan: means 7 months, to bless the pregnancy when it reach 7 months to assure that the baby is healthy and the rice made of white rice
- Tumpeng Putih : means white tumpeng, for general purposes
- Tumpeng Nasi Uduk (also called tumpeng tasyakuran)
